Sharing life experience to improve learning disability awareness

Amazing resources available from Maria McEvoy - Inclusive Volunteering from her workshop discussing how to bring trauma-informed principles to volunteer management.

As an expert with lived experience, a long term volunteer in various roles and someone able to share her story, Pro-Active Community member Leanne told the delegates how she feels recruitment should be ‘adjusted to what a person needs help wise’.

“I might need a safe space, somewhere I can take myself if I feel overwhelmed at work, and a list of what my tasks for my day are. If the phones aren’t ringing it might be boring so I need lots of things to do on a list”

Leanne also hi-lighted the importance of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory training she is delivering with Katie Christmas and the team, currently working across Surrey.

“Learning disability and autism awareness training means more people will understand and I hope that means they make changes so it’s easier for me”

👏🏼Really valuable day, thank you to all the organisers, speakers, panel members and other delegates for sharing so much, Leanne said it was so good to be able to tell people about charities like Pro-Active Community and organisations such as Active Prospects UK who provide invaluable support.

Thank you to Helen Stanley for the Fundraising workshop providing so much opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, concerns or challenges with others in the room, and of course for lighting the passion in everyone to review their approach and organisational story to maximise grant potential.
